SCO Summit:PM Modi urges to end double standards on terror

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asserted a firm stance against double standards on terrorism at the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.Speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif present in the room, Modi underscored that the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack was not just a blow to India but an assault on humanity itself.“Recently, we saw a very disgusting form of terrorism in Pahalgam. This attack was not only a blow to India’s conscience, it was an open challenge to every country, every person who believes in humanity,” Modi said at the Tianjin summit.Without naming Pakistan, the prime minister questioned whether “the open support of terrorism by some countries” can be acceptable. He reminded the gathering that India has borne the brunt of terrorism for over four decades, leaving thousands of families devastated.
PM Modi stressed that the SCO must send out a clear and united message: no compromise and no double standards on terrorism.“We must clearly and unanimously state that no double standards on terrorism will be acceptable. We must jointly oppose terrorism in all its forms and colours. This is our duty towards humanity,” he declared.He thanked the “friendly countries” that stood with India after the Pahalgam attack and emphasized that terrorism, separatism, and extremism continue to pose grave threats to global peace, prosperity, and stability. He highlighted the potential role of the SCO’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure in strengthening collective action.

Modi also spoke on connectivity projects, asserting that sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected in every effort. “Connectivity that by-passes sovereignty loses trust and meaning,” he cautioned, in an apparent reference to projects linked to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.The PM called for deeper cooperation among SCO members on reforming global institutions, including the United Nations, and urged collective efforts to ensure development of the Global South. “Keeping aspirations of the Global South confined in outdated frameworks is a grave injustice to future generations,” he said.PM Modi highlighted India’s own development journey, saying the country is advancing with the mantra of “reform, perform, and transform.” He pointed out that India has sought to turn every crisis into an opportunity, from the Covid pandemic to global economic instability.
