SC puts stay on Class 11 physical exams in Kerala

Worried by an "alarming" COVID-19 situation in Kerala, the Supreme Court on Friday stayed a state government decision to hold offline Class 11 exams. The court ordered the exams be paused for a week, saying: "Children of tender age can't be exposed to the risk. A bench of Justice Khanwilkar, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice CT Ravikumar said that the situation in Kerala is alarming with reference to the Covid-19 cases.

Justice Roy underlined the seriousness of the issue by pointing out Kerala "has one of the best medical infrastructures... but has not been able to contain Covid cases". The court was responding to a petition that challenged the decision of the Kerala High Court to not interfere with the state government's proposal to hold offline exams. Offline Class 11 exams were scheduled to begin from September 6.

 Kerala has continued to account for almost 70% of daily new Covid-19 cases in India, according to the health ministry data. While India witnessed a minor decline in new infections on Friday, Kerala remained the main contributor with 32,097 new Covid-19 cases. On Thursday, India reported the highest single-day virus cases in at least two months with 47,092 fresh infections,
