Mumbai Customs have seized hydroponic weed, gold and diamonds worth Rs 45 crore in a series of operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, leading to the arrest of 12 individuals involved in the smuggling attempts, officials said.According to information, the seizures were made between December 3 and 10 following specific intelligence inputs. Officials said nine passengers arriving from Bangkok were intercepted and found carrying hydroponic weed valued at Rs 37.26 crore. In several cases, the narcotics were cleverly concealed inside trolley bags tagged to other flights, while others had stuffed the contraband inside lumps of tamarind to evade detection.
All nine passengers were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.In a separate operation, three more passengers from Bangkok were found with 6 kg of suspected hydroponic weed worth Rs 6 crore. They were immediately taken into custody.Customs teams also seized gold worth Rs 1.51 crore from four passengers and diamonds valued at Rs 87.75 lakh from another individual. All five have been booked on charges of smuggling.
