Retail inflation reaches 5-year low in July, Slips below RBI's target

Retail inflation in India reached a five-year low of 3.54% in July, breaking below the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% target for the first time since 2019,according to government data released on Monday. This drop follows June's inflation rate of 5.08%, which was heavily influenced by rising food prices. In July, food inflation moderated to 5.42%, while rural and urban inflation rates both saw reductions, reflecting a general easing of inflationary pressures. In June, the rate saw an uptick for the first time in five months as it accelerated to 5.08 per cent on an annual basis due to an increase in food prices. Retail inflation rate in July 2023 stood at 7.44 per cent, a 15-month high at the time, according to information.

Headline inflation has stayed within the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) tolerance range of 2-6 per cent. However, it has not been 'durably' around the median target of 4 per cent, which is important for the RBI's plans to cut interest rates this year. Rural inflation eased to 4.10 per cent in July from 5.66 per cent in June and 7.63 per cent in July 2023. Urban inflation too edge lower from 4.39 per cent in June to 2.98 per cent in July. In the same month last year, urban inflation quickened by 7.2 per cent, stated report.
Food inflation in India
According to information, food prices, contributing around 50 per cent to the inflation basket, slowed to 5.42 per cent in July, as compared to 9.36 per cent in June and 11.51 per cent in July 2023.
The inflation rate for vegetables stood at 6.83 per cent in July, against June’s rate of 29.32 per cent. For cereals and pulses, which constitute a significant portion of India's staple diet, the prices quickened 8.14 per cent and 14.77 per cent respectively.
The fuel and light prices contracted 5.48 per cent in July, against a contraction of 3.66 per cent in June. The increase in food prices, particularly for vegetables, and the recent rise in telecom tariffs were balanced out by a higher comparison base from July 2023, when inflation peaked at 7.44 per cent over a 15-month period. This indicates that the slower rate of price increases may be only a temporary trend.
During the recently-concluded Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintained its inflation forecast for the current fiscal year at 4.5 percent, despite expressing concerns over rising food prices that could impact core inflation and ongoing geopolitical tensions that threaten to disrupt any relief from the recent decline in crude oil prices to multi-month lows. The MPC voted to leave the rates unchanged at 6.5 per cent.
Meanwhile, analysts suggest that the sustained moderation in inflation could provide the RBI with more flexibility in its monetary policy decisions. The central bank has been maintaining a cautious stance in recent months, balancing the need to control inflation with the imperative of fostering economic recovery.
