RBI cautions public against KYC updation frauds

Reserve Bank of India has cautioned the people against sharing account details and personal information with unidentified persons and agencies. The RBI has said, public should not share bank account login credentials, personal data and information, copies of Know-Your-Customer, KYC documents, card information, Personal Identification Number,PIN, password and One Time Password, OTP with unidentified persons or agencies. Further, such details should not be shared through unauthorised websites or applications. In case they receive any such requests, customers should get in touch with their bank.
RBI has informed that it is receiving reports about customers falling prey to frauds being perpetrated in the name of KYC updation.It said, that the usual modus operandi in such cases include receiving unsolicited calls, emails or messages from unidentified person, urging the customer to share personal details like account login, card or PIN information.RBI cautioned that, such communications are also reported to carry threats of account freeze, block or closure. Once a customer shares information over a call, message, unauthorised application, fraudsters get access to the customer's account and defraud him or her.RBI also advised banks that in accounts where KYC updating was pending, no restrictions on operations of such accounts shall be imposed till 31st of December this year.
