Heavy rain lashed Mumbai and its suburbs early Monday morning, leading to widespread waterlogging on key roads and low-lying areas, causing major traffic snarls across the city and crippling the normal life of city residents. Flight services at the Mumbai airport were severely impacted on Monday with runway operations shut for over an hour and 50 flights cancelled due to low visibility after heavy rains in the city, sources said. Of the 50 cancelled flights (both arrivals and departures), 42 services were of the no-frills IndiGo and six of Air India, they said.The weather department issued a high tide warning for the Arabian Sea, as storms began to surge in the sea. Police evacuated people from Dadar Chowpatty seashore in the Shivaji Park area.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday appealed to people not to leave home unless necessary. He said he has also asked the Police Commissioner not to allow anyone near the beaches."461 motor pumps of the municipal corporation and 200 pumps of the Railways are running. I have been in touch with all the departments since morning. Central and Harbour rail line services have started. I took stock of the entire state. There is an orange alert in coastal areas. Army, Navy, and Air Force have been asked to stay on alert," said the Chief Minister.

Some areas in Mumbai received 300 mm of rainfall between 1-7 am on Monday morning, leaving the streets waterlogged and impacting trains and flights. It's still raining after a break.Several areas, including Andheri, Kurla, Bhandup, King's Circle, Vile Parle and Dadar, among other locations, reported significant water accumulation. The incessant rain overwhelmed storm drains, causing traffic to come to a standstill in many parts of India's financial capital.
