The 71st National Film Awards ceremony, held on Tuesday at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, celebrated some of Indian cinema’s finest talents, marking a historic moment for several stalwarts. President Droupadi Murmu conferred the honours, with actors Rani Mukerji, Shah Rukh Khan, Mohanlal, and Vikrant Massey emerging as top awardees for their stellar performances.Veteran actor Rani Mukerji achieved a career milestone by winning her first-ever National Film Award. She was honoured with the Best Actress Award for her powerful performance in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway. Elated by the recognition, Rani expressed her gratitude:“I’m overwhelmed to have won the National Award for my performance in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway. Incidentally, this is the first ever National Award in my 30-year career. I dedicate this honour to mothers everywhere and to my fans for their unwavering love.”
In what turned out to be a Bollywood-dominated year, Shah Rukh Khan clinched his first National Film Award for Jawan. He shared the Best Actor title with Vikrant Massey for his critically acclaimed performance in 12th Fail.Malayalam superstar Mohanlal was bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Indian cinema’s highest honour. The 64-year-old actor became the youngest-ever recipient and only the second from Kerala to receive the recognition.Expressing gratitude, Mohanlal said, “It is with profound pride and gratitude that I stand before you today, having received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. This moment is not mine alone, it belongs to the entire Malayalam film fraternity. I never dared to dream of this moment—it feels magical and sacred.”
The National Film Awards honoured cinematic achievements for the year 2023, with the schedule delayed by two years due to the pandemic. The winners were announced on August 1, 2025, and the ceremony witnessed heartfelt tributes and celebrations of Indian cinema’s diversity.President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the winners, praising their contribution to the cultural and creative heritage of the nation.With honours spanning regional and mainstream cinema, the 71st National Film Awards concluded on a high note, reinforcing the role of Indian cinema as a powerful storyteller for the nation and beyond.
