Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki and conveyed India’s support for the restoration of peace and stability in the neighbouring country, while extending condolences over the loss of lives in recent protests. During the telephonic conversation, PM Modi congratulated Karki on her appointment and extended best wishes on behalf of the Government and people of India. He expressed heartfelt condolences for the tragic deaths in the recent demonstrations in Nepal and underlined India’s readiness to work closely with Kathmandu to strengthen bilateral ties and support Nepal’s efforts towards peace, stability and progress.
Karki thanked PM Modi for India’s steadfast backing and reciprocated his desire to deepen the traditionally close relationship between the two countries. The Prime Minister also extended greetings to Nepal on its upcoming National Day. The two leaders agreed to remain in regular contact.
Karki was appointed interim prime minister last week after the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who stepped down after mounting pressure from a nationwide movement led by Gen Z activists. The youth-driven movement, frustrated with political corruption and stagnant governance, demanded a neutral figure to guide Nepal through a transitional phase.
