Rolled out under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi has emerged as a key financial lifeline for small and marginal farmers in Madhya Pradesh. The scheme provides an annual assistance of Rs6,000 directly into farmers’ bank accounts through three equal instalments of Rs2,000 each at four-month intervals, ensuring timely liquidity during key agricultural cycles. So far, 22 instalments have been disbursed, offering consistent relief to farmers dealing with rising input costs and unpredictable weather conditions.
In the villages of Harda district, the impact of the scheme is visible on the ground. Narendra Bhati, a farmer from Balagaon village, described PM-KISAN as a major relief since its rollout.“Earlier, I had to borrow money at high interest rates to buy seeds, fertilisers and pesticides. Now, the money comes straight into my account before every season. I can purchase inputs at market rates without any middlemen, which has brought down my production costs significantly,” he said.
For Bhati and many others, the direct benefit transfer has reduced dependence on informal credit sources and enabled better financial planning.Another farmer, Nandkishore Gaur, said the timely instalments have ensured uninterrupted farming activities. “Whether it is ploughing, buying seeds or maintaining the crop, funds arrive exactly when needed. I no longer face financial stress during the season,” he noted.
Similarly, Ashok Gurjar from Chhidgaon Tamoli village highlighted how the scheme has reduced his financial burden. “I no longer need loans for fertilisers and seeds. With direct cash support, I can buy everything at lower prices and have become self-reliant,” he said.Farmers also pointed to the transparency of the scheme as a key strength. With funds directly credited to bank accounts, the process eliminates intermediaries and ensures that the entire benefit reaches the intended recipients, building trust within the farming community.
Beyond financial relief, the scheme has boosted farmers’ confidence, enabling them to adopt improved agricultural practices. The steady income support is helping them invest in quality seeds, modern equipment, and timely irrigation, contributing to better productivity.Experts say the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi has played a significant role in reducing rural indebtedness and promoting self-reliance among farmers. By ensuring transparency and direct transfers, it has strengthened the connection between the government and the agricultural sector. With 22 instalments already delivered, PM-KISAN continues to act as a reliable financial cushion for small farmers, helping them navigate the uncertainties of agriculture while improving their economic resilience.
