As Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 75 on Wednesday, tributes poured in from global leaders, including Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu. But for many, the occasion also revived the remarkable story of Gaurav Siddharth, a Lucknow-born adventurer who inscribed his name in history with the world’s longest motorcycle journey in a single country.
An MBA graduate from IIM Lucknow, Siddharth embarked on his ambitious solo ride on September 17, 2015, coinciding with PM Modi’s 65th birthday. Covering an astonishing 1,25,000 kilometres, the journey spanned nearly three times the Earth’s circumference. Of this, 1,15,093 kilometres were officially recognized by the Guinness World Records after meticulous verification in 2018.
Recalling the adventure in a LinkedIn post, Siddharth said, “With a lot of Pokémon-level enthusiasm, 11 years back today on 17th September, I set out for a ride which entered the Guinness World Record for the longest motorcycle journey ever. Solo travel, no Jio, no YouTube-wala time—counting and saving mobile data in MBs was part of the challenge!”
Flagged off by Baba Ramdev with a message promoting ‘Swadeshi,’ the journey also included seeking blessings from PM Modi’s mother, Heeraben Modi, in Gujarat. Riding his Hero Impulse bike, Bawri 2.0, Siddharth traversed 29 states and five Union Territories, covering over 450 major cities, before concluding the journey on May 23, 2017.Siddharth meticulously prepared for the ride, covering 200–500 km daily at speeds of 50–70 km/h, maintaining logs, receipts, and video evidence to meet Guinness rules, which also prohibited staying in one location for more than two days.

His journey was more than a record attempt—it was a mission to promote ‘Made in India’ products, blood donation awareness, highway safety, and honesty at petrol pumps. He interacted with eminent personalities such as Kiran Bedi, Sourav Ganguly, Anna Hazare, Sri Sri Ravishankar, PT Usha, Ratan Tata, Arvind Kejriwal, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, and Anandiben Patel during the ride.Despite facing accidents, detentions, and confrontations with law enforcement in multiple states, Siddharth persevered, relying on his positivity and interactions with locals. Remarkably, he self-financed the entire expedition, even declining sponsorship offers, including one from Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, to experience survival and travel with limited resources.

In 2018, Guinness World Records certified Siddharth’s feat as the longest motorcycle journey in a single country, surpassing the previous record of 78,000 km set by American biker Danell Lynn. From traversing the Brahmaputra’s rough terrain to engaging with diverse cultures, Siddharth’s journey remains a testament to courage, determination, and the spirit of adventure. His story continues to inspire travelers and dreamers alike, reminding us that with passion and perseverance, no distance is too great to conquer. What is your take on this exhilarating odyssey?
