Several senior opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday staged a protest in the Parliament House complex against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, demanding an immediate discussion on electoral reforms.Carrying posters and placards reading “Stop SIR – Stop Vote Chori,” the leaders gathered near Parliament’s Makar Dwar and raised slogans accusing the government of manipulating the electoral process. Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, DMK MPs Kanimozhi and T.R. Baalu were among those who led the demonstration.
The protest came as the Winter Session opened to repeated adjournments in the Lok Sabha and saw an opposition walkout from the Rajya Sabha. The opposition continued to press for a detailed debate on the SIR, while the government maintained that it was open to discussion but could not commit to a fixed timeline. The political tussle escalated a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the Opposition, accusing it of using Parliament as a “warm-up arena” for elections and a space to vent its frustration. He suggested that the Opposition needed “tips to bring positivity in politics,” remarks that drew sharp reactions across party lines.
