India and Malaysia on Sunday unveiled several initiatives to further shore up cooperation in areas of defence and security, semiconductor and trade after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging talks with his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim.Following the meeting, Modi said India and Malaysia share a "special relationship" and both sides are committed to expanding their ties in diverse sectors. The prime minister also reiterated India's position on combating terrorism as he said: "Our message on terrorism is clear; no double standards, no compromise."
Later, addressing a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Modi thanked his counterpart for the warm welcome and said Malaysia was the destination of his first foreign visit in 2026. Reiterating India’s approach to global peace, Prime Minister Modi said India will continue to support all peacekeeping efforts, while maintaining a firm position against terrorism. He expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and said both countries will work together towards achieving the goals of Prosperous Malaysia and Viksit Bharat. On regional issues, Prime Minister Modi said the Indo-Pacific is emerging as a hub of global growth and reiterated India’s commitment, along with ASEAN, to development, peace and stability in the region. He emphasised India’s support for ASEAN centrality and said the review of the ASEAN–India trade agreements should be completed at the earliest.

PM Modi said India and Malaysia share a special bond as maritime neighbours and highlighted the strong people-to-people links and the presence of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia. The Prime Minister highlighted cultural and educational ties, including the Tamil language in Malaysia. He said the audiovisual agreement signed today will promote film and music exchanges, especially Tamil films. He also mentioned initiatives for youth, including university exchanges, skill development, and startup programs.
