Opposition leaders in Kashmir met on Thursday in Srinagar and announced the formation of an alliance that will "constitutionally fight" the central government's August 5, 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution that accorded special status to J&K. The alliance has been named as the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration. Meeting in Srinagar was held at the residence of Farooq Abdullah, which was attended by Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, He said the opposition leaders would meet again and chalk out a strategy.
Meanwhile, in Jammu, workers of the Dogra Front staged a protest against the meeting held in Srinagar and also opposed the Gupkar Declaration. The Gupkar Declaration is a resolution that was issued after an all-party meeting on August 4, 2019 at the Gupkar residence of National Conference president Farooq Abdullah.The resolution at the end of the meet on August 4, 2019, a day before the Centre announced its decision of revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status and split it into two Union territories, said the parties unanimously resolved that they would be united in their effort to protect and defend the identity, autonomy and special status of Jammu and Kashmir against all attacks and onslaughts.
