The Ministry of Defence on Friday inked agreements worth Rs858 crore for the procurement of advanced air defence systems and maintenance of maritime reconnaissance aircraft, in a move aimed at strengthening India’s military capabilities.The agreements were signed at Kartavya Bhawan in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
A contract worth Rs445 crore has been signed with Rosoboronexport for the procurement of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems for the Indian Army. The system is designed to enhance India’s multi-layered air defence network, providing protection against a range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones and cruise missiles. The deal is also expected to further strengthen the long-standing strategic defence partnership between India and Russia.
In a separate agreement, the ministry signed a Rs413 crore contract with Boeing India Defense Private Limited for the depot-level inspection of P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft operated by the Indian Navy. The contract, awarded under the “Buy Indian” category with 100 per cent indigenous content, will enable maintenance of the P-8I fleet at in-country maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities.The ministry said the move aligns with the government’s push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Make in India programme, aimed at enhancing domestic capabilities in defence production and maintenance.
