LS adjourned till 2 PM amid opposition protests during question hour

The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 p.m. on Thursday after persistent sloganeering and protests by Opposition members disrupted proceedings during the Question Hour.According to agency reports,the House began the day's sitting on a celebratory note, with members congratulating India's medal winners at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow for their achievements.However, soon after the Question Hour commenced, Opposition members raised slogans over the controversy surrounding Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's remarks made during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The continued protests disrupted the proceedings, prompting the Chair to adjourn the House till 2 p.m.
The disruption came a day after the Lok Sabha passed the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 by a voice vote following an intense two-day debate marked by sharp exchanges between the treasury and Opposition benches.The legislation amends the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, with the aim of strengthening the legal framework to curb paper leaks and examination-related malpractices.
During the debate, members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and its allies supported the Bill, describing it as a significant step towards enhancing transparency, accountability and integrity in the public examination system. They said the amendments would introduce stricter punitive provisions to deter unfair practices while protecting the interests of students.Opposition members, however, questioned whether the proposed changes adequately addressed the underlying causes of recurring paper leaks and examination irregularities. They argued that stronger implementation mechanisms and greater accountability were also necessary to prevent future incidents.The amended law seeks to tighten measures against examination fraud through stricter penalties while reinforcing the credibility of public recruitment and entrance examinations.
The Bill is scheduled to be taken up for consideration in the Rajya Sabha later on Thursday.
