The ruling BJP headed for a big win once again in Gujarat local body polls, winning 2,085 of 8,474 seats across various municipalities that voted on Sunday and establishing a wide gap with closest rival Congress. Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took up from where it left last week, scoring again on its debut with 15 seats when report last came in. Of a total of 8,474 seats involved, elections were held on 8,235 seats while in the rest, candidates were elected unopposed.
After BJP registered a clear majaority in Gujarat local body poll results, PM Narendra Modi thanked the people of the state for their "unwavering faith and affection towards BJP". "Results of the Nagar Palika, Taluka Panchayat and District Panchayat polls across Gujarat give a crystal clear message- Gujarat is firmly with the BJP’s agenda of development and good governance. I bow to the people of Gujarat for the unwavering faith and affection towards BJP," PM Modi said.
Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda and leader Paresh Dhanani submit resignation after the party's loss in the local body elections. However, after submitting his resignation Amit Chavda blamed the EVM machines for the Congress loss.As per the State Election Commission, there are a total of 8,474 seats across 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayats and 231 taluka panchayats in Gujarat, out of which candidates on 237 seats remain unopposed, and no form was filled for two seats in taluka panchayat. Thus, elections were held on a total 8,235 seats, it said.
