Landslide in Mumbai kills 7

Heavy monsoon rains triggered a landslide in a densely populated in Mumbai, early Wednesday, killing at least seven people and injuring seven others, authorities said. A landslide struck a chawl in Chirag Nagar, Ghatkopar West. The incident occurred at around 3:48 AM, when mud and debris from a hillock fell on two to three rooms of the chawl.  
The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared the incident a Level 2 emergency at 4:32 AM. Rescue operations were carried out jointly by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Around 50 civic personnel and NDRF personnel were involved in the operations. The injured are undergoing treatment at Kurla Bandraa Hospital and Rajawadi hospital, with their condition reported to be stable.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and reviewed the rescue operations. She announced financial assistance of four lakh rupees to the family of each deceased person and 50,000 rupees for each injured person. Civic authorities said residents in vulnerable hill areas had been alerted before the monsoon and advised to move to safer locations. Meanwhile rescue teams continued searching the debris to ascertain whether anyone else was trapped.
Mumbai receives some of its heaviest rainfall between June and August 12. Torrential downpours routinely inundate roads and railway lines, and disrupt air and rail traffic. They also trigger landslides and building collapses, particularly in crowded hillside settlements where houses are often built on unstable slopes.
