Bangladesh sentences to death 7 Awami League leaders

In Bangladesh, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 has convicted and sentenced seven people, including Awami League (AL) General Secretary and former minister Obaidul Quader, to death in a case of crimes against humanity over killings during the July 2024 uprising in Dhaka. The three-member second tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, pronounced the judgement on Tuesday. The other convicts in the case are- AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Md Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Md Saddam Hossain and Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of half of the assets of Quader, Nasim, Arafat, Parash and Nikhil. It also ordered that the confiscated assets be sold and the proceeds handed over as compensation to the families of those killed in the July Uprising and those injured. The tribunal said the compensation would be provided through the July Foundation or another statutory institution.
The prosecution alleged that more than 1,400 protesters were killed and over 25,000 were seriously injured in widespread, systematic and targeted attacks on the civilian population carried out with the accused’s knowledge and involvement.The investigation began on June 18, 2025, and the investigation agency submitted its report to the prosecution on December 7. The tribunal took cognisance of the seven charges on December 18 and framed seven charges on January 22, 2026. The trial began on February 17, with 29 prosecution witnesses testifying.
