Kharge on Tuesday held a number of meetings with party leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Congress central observers, newly-elected MLAs and the two main contenders Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah, the said. There has, however, been no official word from DK Shivakumar on whether he has accepted. The Congress has been struggling to get Shivakumar on board with the idea of a second term for Siddaramaiah in the top post. Shivakumar has been insisting on the top post, citing his work over the last four years: Rebuilding the party after a chunk of its MLAs walked out toppling the alliance government with HD Kumaraswamy four years ago, and then leading it to the massive mandate in the last week's assembly election. Karnataka Congress working president Eshwar Khandare also met with the party's national president Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss recent developments. Khandare expressed confidence in the unity of the Congress party and stated that a decision on the Chief Ministerial post is expected by today. In the recently held election, Congress secured 135 seats out of the 224-member Karnataka Assembly.
