The Congress on Friday appointed new presidents in two poll bound states. Former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee after Amarinder Singh Raja Warring resigned from the post.Warring had earlier in the day met party leader Rahul Gandhi and formally submitted his resignation. He called his departure a victory for former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi.The 61-year-old three-time MLA from the Jalandhar Cantonment seat, Singh's elevation comes after weeks of internal wrangling over the leadership of the state unit that threatened to hurt the party’s campaign for the assembly elections.
The Congress also appointed Aradhana Misra-Mona the president of its Uttar Pradesh unit and named MP Imran Masood the working president, effecting a major organisational reshuffle ahead of the assembly polls in the state next year. Devendra Nishad and Alok Prasad appointed as vice presidents of the state unit.
Mona, daughter of Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari, replaces Ajay Rai, who has been the Uttar Pradesh Congress president since August 2023. Mona was the CLP leader until now. Congress has only two MLAs in the Assembly and Chaudhary Virendra Singh will replace Mona as Legislature Party Leader in UP.
