Both the houses of Karnataka legislature will hold the sittings from today as a 10-day session amidst the slowdown in Covid-19 infection begins. Ruling BJP government is mulling to bring in two new bills in the brief session. One pertains to stop 'love jihad' or inter-faith marriages and the other one is meant to ban cow slaughter.
Opposition Congress wants to thwart this move. It wants to concentrate on the financial position of the state and demanded a white paper.
The BJP is also planning to overthrow the present Congress chairman of Legislative Council Pratap Chandra Shetty and bring in a party leader to the post as it has got majority in the Upper House now. The gram panchayat elections are also slated in the last week of this month and code of conduct is in place.
Meanwhile, chief minister BS Yediyurappa is under immense pressure to expand his cabinet mainly by those who helped BJP to form government. The high command has not given green signal for expansion or reshuffle of cabinet despite the recent visit of party's incharge Arun Singh's visit to Karnataka. He met many MLAs and ministers and elicited their views but did not give any solution to their problems. He put the entire onus of expansion on chief minister's shoulder.
Apart from this, the high court has directed the state government to hold elections for the Bengaluru Metropolitan Corporation. The state government wanted to delay it till the rearrangement of wards to 248 from the present 198, and may move Supreme Court against the high court order.
