In Indonesia, at least 15 workers were killed and 25 others missing after an unlicensed gold mine collapsed in West Sumatra. Solok Disaster Mitigation Agency Chief Irwan Efendi told media on Friday that the incident occurred in Nagari Sungai Abu in the province’s Solok regency. He said, rescuers with heavy equipment have been deployed to evacuate victims. The landslide hit a remote site in the province on Thursday evening after heavy rains in the area, provincial disaster mitigation agency spokesperson Ilham Wahab said.
"The landslide location is on an old mining pit that had been abandoned by previous miners," it said. The Solok district disaster agency said in its statement that the area had no mobile phone signal, making it hard for rescuers to communicate with each other. Unlicensed mines are common across the archipelagic country and several accidents have occurred in the past years.Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season, typically between November and April, but some disasters caused by adverse weather have taken place outside that season in recent years.
