The Government has mandated caller name display service for telecom users from November1.The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed all telecom service providers to introduce the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service across all service areas from first November. Under the service, the name of the caller, as recorded in the subscriber database of the originating telecom service provider, will be displayed on the recipient’s phone along with the caller’s number. In the case of international calls from unsaved numbers, the display will show ‘International Call’. The service will be provided to all users without requiring a separate request.
"At the time when a call is incoming, the calling name presentation service presents the calling name identity of the calling user on the user terminal of the called user," according to a circular issued by the Indian Ministry of Communications dated October 13, 2026. The circular noted that a CNAP rollout for 2G and 3G networks, as well as public switched telephone networks (PSTNs), will be taken up separately after examination.
DoT said that telecom service providers have already conducted trials of this service on wireless terrestrial networks operating on 4G and higher-generation technologies. It added that introduction of CNAP services in wireless terrestrial networks established using 2G and 3G technologies and in public switched telephone networks will be considered separately. Telecom operators are also expected to provide a Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) facility, as part of which users can choose to hide their caller identity when making calls.
