The southwest monsoon finally reached Maharashtra and Mumbai,ending a prolonged wait that stretched 13 days beyond its usual arrival date of June 11. The much-awaited rainfall brought relief from persistent heat and humidity, but also caused widespread disruption in several parts of the city as roads and subways were inundated.Mumbaikars on Wednesday woke up to damage caused by overnight spell of heavy rain. Parts of the maximum city reported over 200 mm of rainfall on Tuesday night, resulting in flooded roads, disrupting suburban train services and exposing the city's vulnerable infrastructure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city, warning of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.Between 8:30 pm Tuesday and 5:30 am Wednesday, three stations in the city-Ram Mandir, Colaba, and Santacruz -- recorded extremely heav Ram Mandir topped the list with 224 mm of rain, followed by Colaba recording 218.5 mm of rain and Santacruz recording 210.6 mm rain.

Commuters faced traffic disruptions as roads became difficult to navigate and civic authorities moved to restrict access to flooded areas.On Wednesday morning, severe waterlogging caused by incessant overnight rain was visible in several parts of Mumbai. The crucial Dadar station was waterlogged as heavy rain battered the city on Wednesday morning. A car was damaged after a tree fell on it in Dadar during heavy rain.

Heavy rains lashed Maharashtra's Thane and Palghar districts over the last 24 hours, triggering a landslide at the scenic Malshej Ghat and leading to dozens of complaints of tree falls, officials said on Wednesday.Thane city recorded 77.97 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, taking the season's total to 81.26 mm. Last year, it recorded 755.63 mm of rainfall for the same period, as per the RDMC.

Announcing the monsoon's progress, the IMD said, “The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, the remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, and some more parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. The northern limit of the monsoon passes through Dahanu, Wardha, Raipur, Daltonganj, and Motihari.”
