Heavy rain pushes Alaknanda above warning mark in Rudraprayag

Continuous heavy rainfall has pushed the water level of the Alaknanda River above the warning mark at Rudraprayag headquarters, prompting the district administration to issue a safety advisory and place authorities on high alert.According to the Rudraprayag Municipal Council, persistent rainfall across the region has caused a steady rise in the water levels of rivers, streams and drains. Public announcements are being made across the municipal area, urging residents, particularly those living along riverbanks, to remain vigilant and shift to safer locations as a precaution.

Municipal Council Chairperson Santosh Rawat said the continuous downpour had led to swelling of rivers, drains and streams, resulting in a sustained increase in water levels.
"We are advising residents in affected areas, including the entire municipal zone, to move to safer locations. Those living along riverbanks are urged to vacate their homes and relocate to safer areas," she said.Rawat added that municipal teams are making regular public announcements and are being deployed wherever required to provide relief and assistance.
The swollen Alaknanda has also disrupted access to houses situated along the riverbank. The Rudraprayag Sangam and adjoining ghats have been completely submerged as the river continues to flow above the warning level.Officials are closely monitoring the situation and have appealed to residents in vulnerable areas to strictly follow official advisories and avoid venturing near rivers and other water bodies.
Meanwhile, the Kedarnath Yatra remains suspended after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall blocked the trekking route near Gaurikund on Thursday,according to agency reports.
The landslide occurred around 200 metres ahead of the Gaurikund Gate, where a large volume of debris and boulders crashed onto the trekking route, completely cutting off access to the pilgrimage path.As a precaution, the administration suspended the yatra and shifted stranded pilgrims to safer locations. Teams from the police, district administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies have been deployed to clear debris, assess the damage and restore connectivity.
