The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday called on district administrations to intensify precautionary measures as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for several parts of the state over the next four days.In an official release, the government said an upper air circulation has triggered the formation of a low-pressure area over regions near the southeast Sri Lanka coast and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal as of 8:30 am on Saturday. According to IMD forecasts, this system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to the northeast, delta, and coastal districts of Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
The statement advised district authorities to remain on high alert. “The district administrations are advised to take all necessary precautionary measures,” the release said.
For the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts. Between the next 24–48 hours, similar conditions are expected in Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, and Villupuram.According to information, the government also issued an advisory for fishermen, warning them against venturing into the Gulf of Mannar and Kanniyakumari sea areas due to squally winds blowing at speeds of 35–45 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 55 kmph.
