Gujarat police launch ‘NARIT AI’ to strengthen narcotics investigations

In a significant tech-driven push, the Gujarat Police on Friday introduced an artificial intelligence-based application, ‘NARIT AI’ (Narcotics Analysis & RAG-based Investigation Tool), aimed at making narcotics investigations more robust and improving conviction rates in court.Officials described the platform as a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, built on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology. The system is designed to assist investigating officers in handling complex cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 by integrating legal provisions, case laws, and procedural guidelines into a single interface.

Developed by the Western Railway Police in collaboration with a Mumbai-based AI startup, the tool was created under the guidance of Gujarat Director General of Police K L N Rao and Surat City Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot.Gujarat has witnessed a steady rise in narcotics-related offences over the past decade, including smuggling operations linked to international drug cartels operating from Pakistan and Iran. In the last two years alone, enforcement agencies seized drugs worth Rs3,727 crore across 1,646 cases. Data tabled in the state Assembly also revealed that nearly 41,000 kg of narcotics had been confiscated.Investigators have long faced challenges in ensuring strict procedural compliance under NDPS laws, often resulting in acquittals even in cases with strong evidence.

The newly launched tool seeks to address these gaps by guiding officers through legally sound investigation practices.“This app will help avoid those lapses, improve the quality of investigation, and ultimately increase the conviction rate in NDPS cases,” said officials.“This model is based on innovative RAG-based AI technology as well as historical judgments of the high court and the Supreme Court regarding bail and trial in NDPS cases, bare acts of BNS, BNSS, BSA, the NDPS Act, as well as government guidelines and circulars,” said officials.Authorities added that the application complies with the latest guidelines issued by the Gujarat High Court on the use of artificial intelligence. It has been categorised as a private AI system developed exclusively for the Gujarat Police and is not accessible to the general public. The platform can also anticipate potential defence arguments in court and recommend counter-strategies based on past judicial precedents, further strengthening the prosecution’s case.
