England's cricketers overcame a spirited Pakistan to lift the T20 World Cup trophy with a comfortable five-wicket victory at Melbourne on Sunday. The Pakistani fans were longing for an encore of 1992 when Imran Khan's team created history at this very venue but batting let Babar Azam's side down as 137 for 8 was never going to be good enough. Ben Stokes, who was also a protagonist in England's 2019 World Cup final win, hit the winning runs and scored his first-ever T20I half century in the process. He finished on 52 off 49 balls. Pakistan looked capable of defending the total when they dialled up the pressure but Stokes and Moeen Ali turned it around with some big hits in the last five overs. Earlier, it was Sam Curran who led the way for England with figures of 3/12. England also became the first team in men's cricket to hold the 50-over World Cup and the T20 World Cup titles simultaneously. Arguably the best white-ball side in world cricket, England became only the second team after West Indies to win two T20 World Cup titles.

For Pakistan, it was a big disappointment as they had miraculously qualified for the semi-finals despite losing to Zimbabwe and India in their first two Super 12 matches in Australia. There were plenty of talks about Babar Azam-led side emulating Imran Khan's 'Cornered Tigers' from 1992 as both sides had defied odds to reach the final stages of the World Cups.
