An earthquake of 5.9 magnitude jolted several parts of north India on Friday night, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said. The tremors, which lasted a few seconds, were felt in Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana. There were no reports of any damage or casualties. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has reported a 5.8-magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter in Jurm district of Badakhshan province. According to the agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 186.4 kilometers. The earthquake struck at 9.42 pm.
The tremors were also reported in Jammu and Kashmir and Kargil. The NCS reported the earthquake's depth at 75 km, stating that the earthquake's great depth was the reason for the strong tremors in Delhi-NCR.According to reports, the tremors, felt around 9.50 pm, were reported from multiple cities, including Delhi, Noida, Chandigarh, Ludhiana in Punjab, and Poonch, Srinagar, and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a statement released by the Kabul governor’s office, a residential house collapsed in the Gousfand Dara area of Bagrami district due to the earthquake. The statement said six people were killed in the incident and one person is missing. Afghanistan frequently experiences earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, which lies in a highly active seismic zone, according to the Red Cross. Afghanistan's vulnerability to earthquakes is linked to its location along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. A major fault line also passes through parts of the country, including the Herat region.
