Delhi borders sealed to halt farmers' protest march

Farmers from Punjab, Haryana and a few other states are slated to reach Delhi on Thursday to demonstrate against the Centre's new farm laws. A call for "Delhi Chalo" was issued in this regard by various farmer groups and led to prohibitory orders being put in place by the Haryana government and the Delhi Police. The Delhi government has refused to allow any rally in the city, citing the coronavirus outbreak. Massive security arrangements have been made at the borders with Delhi at Gurugram and Faridabad.

Hundreds, if not thousands of farmers were seen on the Punjab side of the inter-state border with Haryana along with their tractor trolleys on Wednesday. A convoy of farmers and anti-farm bill protestors travelling from Madhya Pradesh to Delhi, led by activist Medha Patkar, was stopped near Agra by the Uttar Pradesh authorities. Medha Patkar has been arrested. Delhi Metro services will also be regulated till 2 pm Thursday afternoon in light of the "Delhi Chalo" call issued by farmers. The decision for the same was taken at the request of the Delhi Police, the DMRC said.
