Addressing the House, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman defended the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, amid Opposition objections. She said, "This law comes after two years of deliberation," adding that the Company Law Committee’s 2022 report was also put out for public consultation.Regarding regulatory powers, she said the provisions for the National Financial Reporting Authority are in line with those of bodies such as SEBI, CCI, and IBBI.Addressing CSR concerns, Sitharaman clarified, "Only the net profit criteria is being amended to favour small businesses that are striving to grow."
The move comes as the second phase of the Budget Session of Parliament reconvened on Monday. The Finance Minister is also expected to move the Finance Bill, 2026, which outlines the Centre’s financial proposals for the 2026–27 fiscal year, for consideration.Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the Lok Sabha at 2 p.m. on the situation in West Asia.
The second leg of the Budget Session resumed at 11 a.m. following a brief recess on March 19 and March 20 on account of Ugadi and Eid. Parliament will also sit on March 28 and March 29 to compensate for the holidays.Meanwhile, several ministers, including Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Jayant Chaudhary, Shobha Karandlaje, Kirit Vardhan Singh, Sukanta Majumdar, and Harsh Malhotra, are scheduled to lay papers on the table of the House.Union Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Harsh Malhotra will also make a statement on the action taken by the government on the previous recommendations of the Committee on Demands for Grants (2024–25).
