Cloudburst triggers heavy floods in Dehradun, 200 students rescued

Uttarakhand has been hit hard by persistent rainfall over the past few weeks, leading to floods, loss of lives, and widespread damage to property. A cloudburst and overnight downpour in several parts of Dehradun worsened the situation, leaving roads damaged, houses and shops destroyed, and a bridge washed away in the early hours of Tuesday.Disaster Response personnel on Tuesday rescued 200 students stranded at the Devbhoomi Institute campus in Paunda area of Dehradun after the premises were waterlogged following heavy overnight rains.
Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said that severe damage was reported from areas like Sahastradhara and Mal Devta in Dehradun, as well as from Mussoorie. At least two people have gone missing in Dehradun, while one death has been reported in Mussoorie, which is being verified. He added that 300–400 people have been moved to safety, with teams carrying out relief and rescue operations in the worst-hit zones.

The Centre has assured full assistance to the flood-hit state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to review the situation and, in a recent high-level meeting, announced Rs1,200 crore in financial aid for relief and rehabilitation. He also declared an ex-gratia of Rs2 lakh for families of the deceased and Rs50,000 for the injured.

Chief Minister Dhami, who is visiting the affected areas along with senior officials and local MLAs, said the administration, SDRF, and police teams were already on the ground carrying out rescue work. “The state government stands with every affected family. The administration is on alert mode and the NDRF, SDRF, police, and local officials are constantly active. I am personally monitoring the situation and pray for everyone’s safety,” the chief minister said in a post on X.

Heavy rains also caused the Song River to overflow, flooding nearby localities. The Tamsa River was in spate, while the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple in Dehradun was inundated. Similar conditions were reported from the Chandrabhaga River in Rishikesh, where SDRF personnel had to rescue a stranded vehicle as torrential rain lashed the region.

Widespread damage to infrastructure has been reported across Nagaland due to heavy rain over the last few days, an official report stated. According to a report issued by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) for the period September 8 to 14, heavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides, mudslides and floods, leading to damage to public infrastructure such as roads and bridges, and also homes and farmlands. It said that Chumoukedima district was among the worst affected. A mudslide at Pagla Pahar completely cut off road connectivity, while another was reported near Old Chumoukedima Check Gate.
