Chaos at RG Kar protest: Victim’s mother alleges assault by police

In West Bengal, Police baton-charged protestors at the Park Street crossing in central Kolkata during a march to the Secretariat Nabanna on Saturday to mark the completion of one year of the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor inside the state-run RG Kar hospital. Tension prevailed as protestors tried to breach the barricades in their attempt to head towards the Vidyasagar Setu after ignoring police warnings not to move beyond the Rani Rashmoni Road assembly point. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, alongside BJP leader Agnimitra Paul and other BJP MLAs held a sit-in at the Park Street-J L Nehru Road crossing, while alleging that more than 100 protestors, including Adhikari and other BJP leaders, were injured in police action.

Victim's mother has claimed that she suffered a head injury in police action this morning during a protest rally to Nabanna, the state secretariat that houses the office of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The 'Nabanna Abhiyan' was called by the parents of the doctor to mark a year since the horrific incident. "Why are they stopping us? All we want is to reach secretariat and seek justice for my daughter," news agency PTI quoted her as saying.Her husband alleged that despite having a court permission for the rally, they were stopped from joining the march.

Six FIRs have been registered, including one against BJP MLA Ashoka Dinda, in the light of alleged atrocities in connection with the state secretariat ‘Nabanna march’ march.Police said the protesters did not obey the Calcutta High Court order for a peaceful protest.
