Centre clears additional 25 LMT wheat exports to support farmers

The Government of India (GoI) has approved the export of an additional 25 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat, a move aimed at boosting farmers’ incomes while ensuring stability in domestic prices. The decision follows a detailed review of production estimates, stock levels, and prevailing price trends. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the measure is expected to improve market liquidity, streamline stock management, and prevent distress sales during the peak arrival season.Officials stated the calibrated export policy would allow surplus stocks to be offloaded without disrupting domestic availability, thereby maintaining a balance between farmer welfare and consumer interests.
India’s wheat production for the 2025–26 crop year is projected at a robust 1,202 LMT, as per estimates by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The strong output outlook is supported by increased sowing, with wheat acreage rising to around 334.17 lakh hectares in the Rabi 2026 season, compared to 328.04 lakh hectares in the previous year. The government attributed the rise in cultivation to favourable conditions, including an assured Minimum Support Price (MSP) regime and strong procurement systems, which have helped build farmer confidence and encouraged higher sowing.
According to information, with the latest approval, the total permitted wheat exports have now reached 50 LMT, along with 10 LMT of wheat products. Earlier this year, the government had cleared exports of 5 LMT of wheat products in January, followed by an additional 5 LMT of wheat products and 25 LMT of wheat in February. The ministry noted that allowing additional exports will not only support farmgate prices but also contribute to efficient inventory management by reducing excess stock pressure during peak arrivals.
