The bypolls were closely watched for indications of the BJP's electoral strength as the ruling party and the condition of the Opposition amid a divided political landscape. The polling process, however, witnessed allegations of voter intimidation, irregularities at polling booths and sporadic clashes. The arrest of AJUP chief Humayun Kabir following a confrontation with police in Rejinagar, along with the Congress's demand for repolling in both constituencies, raised concerns over the conduct of the bypolls. The Election Commission described polling as more or less peaceful.
Vijay's TVK Wins Dharapuram; Stalin Alleges Model Code Violation
In Tamil Nadu, TVK candidate P Sathyabama won the Dharapuram Assembly seat, defeating DMK's S Suganya by 9,471 votes. The party was also leading in Madurantakam as counting progressed. The bypolls were held after the TVK came to power in May, making the results an important electoral test for the four-month-old government led by Vijay. BJP Leads in Assam's Nagaon Lok Sabha Bypoll
In Assam, the BJP was leading in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election. The constituency recorded a voter turnout of 76.19% among its 19.05 lakh electors. The bypoll was necessitated after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and subsequently contested the Assembly elections from Dispur on a BJP ticket earlier this year. The key candidates included former Congress MLA Sibamoni Bora, former IAS officer Devasish Sharma of the BJP and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal.
VIDEO | Nagaon: BJP MLA Pradyut Bordoloi on the Nagaon bypoll, says, "This mandate has made one thing clear: it has provided complete proof of the hollowness of the Congress leadership. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, I was the Congress candidate from Nagaon and won this seat by a margin of around 2.5 lakh votes. But after I left the Congress and resigned from the Lok Sabha, a by-election was held here. This time, the Congress even forfeited its security deposit. That is the situation. The reason is that the Congress leadership sits at the top but has no connection with the ground-level workers here; it is totally disconnected from them....."
