BJP protests in Srinagar over unemployment, corruption

BJP leaders and workers staged a protest at Ghanta Ghar in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk on Wednesday against the Omar Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir government, raising issues of unemployment, price rise and alleged corruption.According to agency reports,the protesters marched towards the Civil Secretariat and staged a gherao, while heavy security was deployed along the route from Ghanta Ghar to the Secretariat.


BJP leader Altaf Thakur said the protest was aimed at highlighting unemployment, corruption and issues related to Panchayat elections.The BJP has also criticised the recent electricity tariff hike in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has maintained that the increase was taken as a measure of compulsion.
Meanwhile, the National Conference has announced a separate protest at Gindun Park, demanding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and accountability for commitments made by the Centre in Parliament and before the Supreme Court.Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma criticised the timing of the National Conference protest, saying the BJP’s demonstration had been announced earlier and primarily focused on employment opportunities for youth.The BJP has also alleged that the National Conference’s move was aimed at diverting attention from issues concerning young people.


Security has also been strengthened around the BJP office in Srinagar ahead of the National Conference’s planned march.The BJP has repeatedly demanded restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, which was converted into a Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
