Bihar Assembly polls: Campaigning intensifies for 2nd & final phase

The electioneering for the second and final phase of the Bihar Assembly polls is at a high pitch. Various leaders of political parties are trying their best to woo the voters. Senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed an election rally in Sitamarhi. The Prime Minister said that the NDA not only focuses on development but also preserves the state’s heritage. He said that the NDA government, under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, has rebuilt the faith of the people of Bihar, and now investors are eager to come to the state.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should have made someone from the SC, ST or minority communities the leader of opposition of Lok Sabha if he is really concerned about them. Addressing back-to-back rallies in Rohtas and Kaimur districts, Singh dismissed Gandhi's allegation of 'vote chori' as "baseless", and said he should approach the Election Commission if he has a complaint with evidence.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah at a rally in Supaul took a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's ‘Mohabbat ki Dukaan’ phrase. Shah alleged that Gandhi's “dukaan” will be closed, claiming that the Opposition INDIA bloc would be “wiped out” in the state. Shah further seemed to warn the voters, saying that if they do not want “infiltrators” in the state, they should vote against the RJD and Congress, which took out a yatra to “save them.” The union home minister also promised that if the NDA is voted to power in the state, the waters from Nepal's rivers which wreak floods and destruction in Bihar would be used to irrigate farmers' fields.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said in Katihar that the Mahagathbandhan and Congress are committed to providing equal representation to all sections of society. Mrs Gandhi emphasised that it is essential to form a Mahagathbandhan government to ensure that the backward classes, minorities, and Dalits are included in the mainstream of development. She also said that Congress supports a caste-based census on this very principle.

Janata Dal (United) President and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar addressed public meetings in Rafiganj in Aurangabad and Imamganj in Gaya. Speaking in Rafiganj, he said that after assuming power in 2005, his government made remarkable improvements in the education and health sectors. The Chief Minister pointed out that earlier, only 39 people used to visit government health centres in a year, but now a large number of people are availing medical services.
