The Assam Cabinet on Friday decided that the Aadhar cards to adult citizens will be issued only by District Commissioners (DCs) in the state. This will ensure that no illegal immigrant can get an Aadhar made and we can track and push them back easily. Chief Minister Himant Biswa Sarma informed media about the Cabinet decision in Guwahati. 'Last night we pushed back 20 more Bangladeshis as part of our ongoing efforts to detect and push back illegal infiltrators. The decision to toughen Aadhar issuance rules will only aid our efforts in this direction,' he said.Sarma stated that the move is designed to plug the gaps in the system that have, in the past, allowed foreign nationals to access Indian identity documents.

By routing the issuance of Aadhaar through DCs, the government hopes to implement stricter verification procedures and enhance the scrutiny of documentation before granting the all-important biometric identity. Aadhaar, issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is a 12-digit identity number that serves as proof of both identity and residence in India.
The Cabinet also decided to ensure fair representation of SCs and STs in Zilla Parishad across the state and it further approve an Ordinance to amend Moran and Matak Council Rules to ensure equitable development for the communities.
