Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth Rs1,715 crore in Assam’s Dibrugarh, underscoring the Centre’s focus on infrastructure-led growth in the poll-bound state.Shah unveiled the projects in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, MPs and MLAs from upper Assam, members of the state cabinet and senior government officials.
A key project announced was the foundation stone laying for the second legislative assembly complex and MLA hostel, estimated to cost ₹284 crore. The initiative is part of the government’s plan to develop Dibrugarh as Assam’s second administrative hub. The project will include a three-storey assembly building, a nine-storey hostel for legislators, an 800-seat auditorium and dedicated barracks for security personnel.The home minister also inaugurated the first phase of a modern multi-disciplinary sports complex built at a cost of ₹238 crore and laid the foundation stone for its second phase, which will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹209 crore. The first phase includes an indoor stadium, swimming pool, football field, main gallery, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, along with hostel facilities. Officials said the second phase will add seating capacity for 30,000 spectators, a central playground and a full-fledged athletic track.
In a major boost to wildlife conservation, Shah laid the foundation stone for a ₹292 crore Wildlife Health and Research Centre aimed at improving treatment facilities for wild animals. The project will include an educational and administrative block, a central laboratory, a museum, a state-of-the-art auditorium, a clinical block and advanced laboratory facilities with radiation units. Officials said the centre will strengthen coordination among forest officials, veterinarians and researchers.Shah also launched a ₹692 crore project for the restoration and rejuvenation of wetlands under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund. The initiative will focus on restoring 15 scientifically selected wetlands across nine districts of Assam. According to officials, the project aims to reduce urban flood risks, improve water retention capacity, mitigate flooding and contribute to comprehensive flood management in the Brahmaputra river basin.
