All passengers stranded on two Mumbai monorail rescued

Preliminary investigation into the Mumbai Monorail incident on Tuesday evening has revealed that overcrowding was the primary cause of the disruption, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) stated in a press note. The MMRDA in their press note mentioned that due to overcrowding, the weight of the monorail had risen to 109 metric tonnes, which crossed its designed capacity of 104 metric tonnes, causing a break in the mechanical contact between the power rail and the current collector, resulting in the disruption of power supply. As per information, a Mumbai monorail broke down near Mysore Colony, leaving 782 passengers stranded for over two hours before being rescued.  Two monorails running on elevated tracks stopped due to a power failure at 6:15 pm during heavy rainfall. Both trains were carrying more passengers than their capacity of 782.

According to officials, the monorail service was halted around 6:15 p.m. following a technical glitch linked to a power supply issue. Passengers contacted the BMC’s helpline number 1916 for assistance, after which the Mumbai Fire Brigade launched a rescue operation using three snorkel (ladder) vehicles.Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in a post on X, assured that the safety of passengers was the top priority. “Due to some technical reason, a monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. The MMRDA, the fire brigade, and the BMC have reached the spot. The highest priority is being given to the safety of all passengers. Therefore, no one should worry or panic. All passengers will be safely evacuated. An inquiry will also be conducted into why this incident occurred,” he said.
