Agri GVA rises to Rs 52.08 lakh cr as India's farm economy expands

India's agriculture and allied sectors have recorded significant growth over the past decade, with the sector's Gross Value Added (GVA) increasing from Rs 20.94 lakh crore in 2014-15 to an estimated Rs 52.08 lakh crore in 2025-26.According to agency reports, foodgrain production rose from 265.05 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 376.56 million tonnes in 2025-26, while horticulture output increased from 280.70 million tonnes to 377.78 million tonnes during the same period. Oilseeds production also rose to 43.06 million tonnes from 27.51 million tonnes in 2014-15.
Government support for farmers expanded through higher budget allocations and welfare schemes. The allocation for the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare increased from Rs 27,663 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 1.40 lakh crore in 2026-27.Under the PM-KISAN scheme, more than Rs 4.47 lakh crore has been transferred directly to farmers through 23 instalments, while claims worth Rs 1.96 lakh crore have been settled under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
Institutional credit and agricultural marketing infrastructure also expanded during the period. More than 7.28 crore Kisan Credit Card accounts were operational as of August 2026, while 1,656 mandis had been integrated with the e-NAM platform.
According to the government technology, natural farming and solar-powered agricultural initiatives have contributed to the sector's transformation. More than 10.31 crore Farmer IDs have been created under the Digital Agriculture Mission, while artificial intelligence-based platforms are increasingly being used for farm advisory services.Agricultural exports also registered strong growth, rising from USD 32.08 billion in 2014-15 to USD 54.70 billion in 2025-26. Growth was also recorded in allied sectors, with milk production increasing to 248 million tonnes and fish production nearly doubling to 197.75 lakh tonnes.
