Amidst face to face situation with PLA along LAC in eastern Ladakh, the Indian Army in a surprise move occupied nearly 30 dominating heights and other such terrains on the southern bank of Pangong Tso. Most of these heights and dominating terrain features were unoccupied or lightly held by Indian troops before the standoff with China in early May this year.
These heights include the Rezang La and Reqin La, both dominating the Spanggur Gap and covering Patrol Points 27 to 31. They also include the dominating heights of Black Top, Hanan, Helmet, Gurung Hill, Gorkha Hill and Magar Hill among others. Thus the sudden lightening move by the Indian troops not only surprised the Chinese troops but also thwarted their covert attempt to capture these unoccupied strategic places.
According to the government sources, the aforementioned heights are very crucial from the defence strategic point of view. By holding such height points in the hilly terrain of eastern Ladakh, India certainly gain advantage. The Indian troops are now better positioned to effectively monitor and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on ground. This move will also work in favour of India in case of a trade-off of territory or while sitting across the table. Eastern Ladakh has approximately 1,600 sq km of disputed area, out of which around 350 sq km is in the south of Pangong Tso. Another 1,250 sq km is disputed in the areas north of the lake. This also includes around 1,000 sq km in the Depsang plains.
Since the bloody skirmishes along the LAC, Indian army were gradually reinforcing their forces in some of these areas, while others have been occupied in the last few days as Indian forces pre-empted PLA activity on the southern bank of the Pangong Tso.It is also reported that Indian Army's specialised units have been stationed at some of those heights which face the ridgelines of Finger 4 in the northern banks of Pangong Tso.The Chinese had built posts on Finger 4 in April this year.
According to defence experts, the southern bank gives the Indian troops an advantage in terms of monitoring the activities in the northern bank. The Chinese were hardening their military postures in the southern bank, too in view of Indian troops holding certain significant heights in the region, said the experts.
Meanwhile as per reports from various sources, the situation along the LAC continues to remain tense with the Indian and Chinese troops facing each other well within small arms firing range. Keeping in view of China's current dominance in the areas between Finger 4 and Finger 8, close to three brigades of troops have been deployed in the south of Pangong Tso, said the defence sources. Besides this, additional acclimatised troops are also put on alert across eastern Ladakh for any subsequent challenges. Army Chief Gen M.M. Naravane yesterday took stock of the security situation and operational preparedness in Ladakh region during his two days Leh visit.
In the meantime to avoid face-offs or escalations, brigadier level talks from both sides are taking place regularly but so far without conclusion . In further efforts to resolve the stand off on LAC, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting with the Chinese Defence Minister in Moscow on his counterpart's request during the SCO summit. Foreign Minister's level talk is also scheduled next week when S.Jaishankar will reach Moscow to attend SCO.
Whatever be the outcome of these high level talks, it clearly appears that India gained militarily strategic advantange. And also well positioned to bargain tough with China. So "How is Josh....High Sir".
