Russians across the country took to the streets to slam Putin's military action against Ukraine. More than 1,000 people gathered in the center of Moscow on Thursday evening, chanting “No to war!” as passing cars honked their horns. Protesters also took to the streets in several other cities, including St. Petersburg outside the historic Gostiny Dvor shopping arcade at about 7pm local time (16:00 GMT). The atmosphere was tense, with a few people crying against the backdrop of a heavy police presence.“Ukraine is not our enemy!” the crowd chanted and clapped. “Russia is against war!” “Putin is a killer! Putin is the shame of Russia!” they shouted. “Ukraine! Ukraine!”

And more than a hundred municipal deputies from Moscow, St Petersburg, Samara, Ryazan and other cities signed an open letter to the citizens of Russia, urging them not to take part or stay silent.Some 1,745 people in 54 Russian cities were detained, at least 957 of them in Moscow, The Associated Press reported. Not only Russia, but protesters turned out on public squares and outside Russian embassies in cities from Tokyo to Tel Aviv and New York on Thursday to denounce the invasion of Ukraine.
