Surbhi Shukla makes a spooky comeback to television with ‘Shaitani Rasmein’

Out of sight is out of mind. This is the biggest truth of entertainment industry and being away from television is a big risk for any actor. But, Surbhi Shukla took that risk for growth. Now, she is returning to television after four years with her latest show ‘Shaitani Rasmein’ on Star Bharat. While revealing about what kept her away from television, Surbhi Shukla admitted, “I know it's big risk to stay away from the screen for a long time, especially when everyday new faces are making headlines.”
She, however, added, “But, I always wanted to do some movies down south and there was time. After 2019, during Covid, the industry was going through slowdown and not much work opportunities were coming to many actors. So, I decided to come out of my comfort zone and try for movies in south. Luckily, I got two movies, one is Rani and another one’s title is yet to be announced. I have already shot for the movies and am waiting for some good project. I was always ready for non-lead characters also, but it should be strong enough to take up the project. Then, I got call from Star Bharat for ‘Shaitani Rasmein’.”
Surbhi Shukla, who gained fame as Rohini in 'Devon Ke Dev Mahadev', has also done shows like Balaji Telefilms’- Mahabharat, CID, Aahat, Jai Baharang Bali, Mahima Shani Dev ki, Betiyann, Akbar Ka Bal Birbal, ‘Buddha’, ‘Suryapuran’. ‘Maharaja Ki Jai Ho,’ was Surbhi Shukla’s last show on television.
‘Shaitani Rasmein’ is not just her comeback show on television but it's also her reunion with Nikhil Sinha after 'Devon Ke Dev Mahadev'. Talking about the show, Surbhi said, “My last show was on Star Plus only ‘Maharaja Ki Jai Ho’, and this would be my super-duper come back as this is my latest association with star and Nikhil Sinha’s banner ‘Triangle Film Company’. I had worked with Nikhil Sinha earlier and I like his team and the positivity they have while working. Even the show’s storyline is really good. It will take you back to your childhood because it's something similar to our Dadi-Nani ki Kahaniya (Granny’s Stories) - supernatural and ghostly.”
“I am playing Arohi’s Character, who is Badi Bahu (elder daughter-in-law) in the family. We all family members in the show including me and my husband everyone has their own desires to fulfill, and they have reasons to perform all ‘Shaitani Rasmein’. As elder daughter-in-law, I share good bond with my Dever (husband’s younger brother), who is getting married. I support and try to help him and his newly-wedded wife to get settled in the family. As the story grows, you will see more layers to my character as well, which I would not like to share right now. Let it be surprise and suspense only,” Surbhi concluded, while elaborating about her character.

Somy Ali: Being famous has many perks and one gets away with many things, even murder

Actress Somy Ali, who runs a US based NGO called No More Tears, was a big part of Bollywood some years back. Be it success of failure, she has seen in all. She says that while stardom comes with a price, it also has a lot of perks.“Who doesn't want to be famous? If they tell you that they are solely in it for the art, they are blatantly lying. Being famous has many perks and one gets away with many things with zero consequences. Even murder and I am not exaggerating because look at O.J. Simpson and many others. Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby raped and abused women for years and got away with it. I can't even begin to imagine what goes on in the Hindi film industry when it comes to knowing there will be absolutely no consequences to whatever you want to do to someone given you have fame which equals power which leads to the abuse of power,” she says.
Loneliness, is another thing that comes with success, she says, adding, “I also believe that many of these stars are quite lonely at the top. This is why they maintain relationships with those who they were friends with prior to being famous. I have also personally witnessed old friends taking advantage of stars once they are suddenly famous. It's a catch 22 and there is no way out. You are essentially selling your soul to the devil and many do it with no remorse whatsoever while some regret it in the long run. I have mostly seen stars very content with the perks, the money, the attention, and the nonstop curiosity an average layperson has about their lives.”
People assume struggle is less when they see successful stars, but this is not true, she says. “If people assume achieving stardom is easy then that is the most naive thought one can enter the industry with and they will face severe psychological hardships. Again, one is rolling the dice of luck and kismet in this field and if both those aren't on your side, you are going to be experiencing eternal doomsville,” she says.
She adds, “There are many examples who have maintained success with luck and immense hard work like Aamir, Shah Rukh, Akshay and some have been simply huge stars tasting the best dish stardom serves while they have zero acting skills. I have seen those actors back when I was there and they are still reigning the industry and yet again with the consistency of absolutely no talent.”
Talking about success, she says, “Success, for me, is to make others happy and I always say there is no altruism in selflessness because it makes the individual happy. Hence, I am not doing anyone any favours because helping others and fighting for justice for others and myself is the life I have chosen to live and it brings me immense happiness.”

Abhishek Duhan: I always knew I wanted to be a movie actor

Mandali actor Abhishek Duhan says that he was always very sure that he wanted to become an actor. He adds that this was his childhood wish, which he is happy that he fulfilled.“I didn't face any confusion while deciding on my career. I always knew I wanted to be a movie actor. It was my dream since childhood, and I never had any doubts. To all the young folks facing career confusion, my advice is to follow your heart. Pursue what you're passionate about with full dedication. Give it your 100%, fall in love with it, and success, money, fame – it will all follow naturally. That's the key to a fulfilling journey,” he says.
He adds, “It's quite common for children to choose careers different from their parents. I believe guidance is essential, but it's equally important to let individuals explore their paths and find what truly resonates with them. Embracing diverse career choices can lead to personal fulfilment. Absolutely, kids often have more freedom to follow their hearts. Communication between parents and kids is crucial. If certain about a career path, express it genuinely. Technology offers vast educational resources. Willpower, dedication, and focus are key to success in pursuing one's passion.”
Talking about how his parents reacted to his decision to become an actor, he says, “Deciding to be a movie actor was challenging for my parents, unfamiliar with the industry. Moving to a new city added another layer of difficulty, especially for them. Though I found it exciting, there were tough times in Bombay. Yet, keeping it in my heart made it easier over time. The key is persistence, and things eventually fall into place.”
He adds, “I didn't perceive any struggles; I enjoyed the journey. Financially, my family supported me, and friends pitched in when needed. Emotionally, family and friends were pillars of support. Never indecisive, I found guidance from teachers like Nadira Zahid Babbar ji and Darpan Mishra. Reflecting, satisfied overall, but feel I could have utilized time better. Life lessons teach us to be aware and make the most of this one life. Be smart about your choices.”
