Piyush Goyal met Russian Deputy PM to boost trade, economic ties

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Friday met Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev to explore ways of strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation, as both sides seek to expand their long-standing strategic partnership.Goyal, in a post on X, described the talks as “fruitful,” adding that India and Russia remain committed to “deepening the partnership and exploring new avenues for collaboration in trade, services, and industrial cooperation.” He stressed that closer ties would help unlock greater opportunities for mutual growth.

According to information, Patrushev, who led a high-level Russian delegation, held meetings with senior officials from key Indian ministries. His discussions with Goyal focused on enhancing oversight mechanisms, boosting fisheries sector cooperation, and expanding access for Russian meat and dairy products in the Indian market. He also called for expediting negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the Eurasian Economic Union.Patrushev separately held talks with Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, Jagat Prakash Nadda, on strengthening cooperation in the supply of mineral fertilizers. He highlighted Russia’s interest in continuing strategic collaboration in this sector.
In his meeting with Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Patrushev emphasized expanding the volume and diversity of agricultural trade. He noted that Russia’s exports of vegetable oils, legumes, and other products to India had significant growth potential, citing a 60% surge in agricultural trade in 2024. Both sides agreed to explore direct institutional linkages and advanced training programs for agricultural specialists.India and Russia have a long history of cooperation across sectors. In 2019, Goyal had met Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev to discuss opportunities in Russia’s Far East region, underscoring the consistent momentum in bilateral economic dialogue.
