OpenAI, Microsoft at odds over AGI access clause

The partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI is under strain as the two companies disagree over a key clause related to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
According to a recent report, the disagreement centers on a provision stating that Microsoft’s access to AGI developed by OpenAI would be nullified once such a breakthrough is achieved. Microsoft is said to be pushing for the removal of this clause, but OpenAI has so far declined to revise the agreement. In a joint statement, the companies downplayed the friction: “We have a long-term, productive partnership that has delivered amazing AI tools for everyone. Talks are ongoing and we are optimistic we will continue to build together for years to come.”
Despite the public show of unity, the report highlights growing strain in what has long been viewed as one of the most significant alliances in the AI industry. The rift also comes as OpenAI seeks Microsoft’s approval to complete its transformation into a public-benefit corporation—an approval that has reportedly stalled due to unresolved issues.Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI began in 2019, when the tech giant invested $1 billion to accelerate AI development using its Azure cloud platform. Since then, the collaboration has yielded groundbreaking tools and services, positioning both firms at the forefront of generative AI innovation.
