Anthropic CEO meets PM Modi, discusses AI & its future

Anthropic CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday to discuss India’s growing role in shaping the future of responsible artificial intelligence (AI). The meeting underscored India’s emergence as a strategic hub for global AI innovation and collaboration.Amodei’s visit follows Anthropic’s announcement to expand its operations to India with a new office in Bengaluru, slated to open in early 2026. The AI research and development company, backed by Google’s parent firm Alphabet, aims to hire local talent and collaborate with Indian businesses, nonprofits, and startups to apply AI in critical sectors such as education, agriculture, and healthcare.
Following the meeting, Amodei shared on X that usage of Claude Code, Anthropic’s agentic command-line tool, has increased fivefold since June. “How India deploys AI across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion people will be essential in shaping the future of AI,” he wrote, highlighting India’s significance in the global AI landscape. Prime Minister Modi, in his response on X, commended India’s young innovators and vibrant tech ecosystem for advancing AI development grounded in human values. “Glad to meet you. India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation that is human-centric and responsible. I look forward to working together to harness AI for growth across key sectors,” the Prime Minister said.

Anthropic’s upcoming Bengaluru office will serve as its second base in the Asia-Pacific region after Tokyo, reflecting the company’s commitment to scaling its AI tools including the Claude family of models to meet India’s rapidly growing demand. With India’s billion-strong internet population and thriving startup ecosystem, the country has become a major frontier in the global AI race. Anthropic’s expansion follows OpenAI’s recent registration in India and its plans to open a New Delhi office, signaling increasing competition among global AI leaders such as Google’s Gemini and Perplexity AI to establish a stronger foothold in the Indian market.
