Karnataka forms panel on student issues, education reforms

The Karnataka government on Thursday constituted a five-member Cabinet sub-committee to analyse challenges in the education sector and recommend reforms in examinations, fee, infrastructure, skill development and student well-being. The committee, headed by Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader, comprises Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy, Home Minister Priyank Kharge, Medical Education and Skill Development Minister Sharan Prakash Patil and School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa. According to a memorandum issued late Wednesday night, the panel will examine measures to prevent question paper leaks and malpractice and ensure transparency, fairness and accountability in state examinations and recruitment processes.
The committee will examine the integrity of examination and recruitment processes, the cost of education, and the regulation of fees and coaching institutions. It will also consider infrastructure and academic standards in public institutions, curriculum reform, skills development and links between education and employment. Student mental health and wellbeing, along with equitable access to education, will also be among the panel’s areas of focus.

Bangarappa said the future of Karnataka depended on its young people and that the government was committed to ensuring quality education, adequate infrastructure and sufficient opportunities for them. He said the government wanted to understand the experiences and expectations of students and respond through appropriate policy measures. The minister also invited suggestions from students, young people and the wider public to help shape the proposed reforms.
The decision follows the “Chhatron Ki Goonj” student movement led by Congress leader and leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, which seeks comprehensive changes to the education system.
