Vietnam death toll rises to 55 from flooding, landslides

In Vietnam, at least 55 people were killed after torrential rain, flooding, and landslides hit the central part of the country. 13  people are missing. Tens of thousands of residents have been evacuated from the flood-affected provinces – Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak and Gia Lai of central Vietnam, a region home to a key coffee production belt and the country’s most popular beaches.  More than 52,000 homes have been submerged in water and half a million houses and businesses have been left without power.

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung told the officials of three flood-affected provinces to mobilise the army, police and other security forces to promptly relocate and evacuate people to safe areas. Major highways have also been overcome with floods and landslides, while 142 other provincial and local roads have either collapsed or been submerged and 13,000 hectares of rice, vegetables and other crops and 2,000 hectares of perennial plants have also been affected, per Tuoi Tre. More than 30,000 livestock and poultry have also reportedly been killed or swept away. The heavy rain and floods follow the country being hit by two typhoons over the last couple of months.
