'Unity in diversity is in India’s DNA': RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in NYC

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said unity and diversity are ingrained in the DNA of the people of Bharat, as he addressed the Indian diaspora at the Universal Oneness Celebration at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York city. Speaking at the mega event, Mohan Bhagwat drew a comparison between the idea of pluralism in the US and Bharat's principle of unity in diversity. "Nations are not merely geographical entities. In the design of this universe, nations have to carry out a duty," Bhagwat said further, in a rather philosophical speech. "Swami Vivekananda said, every nation has a destiny to fulfill. What is the destiny given to Bharat? Bharat is there to realise, and from time to time make the world realise, this unity in diversity. [That] we are one. And due to diversity, that oneness is decorated.". He added that when one thinks of America, the word “pluralism” often comes to mind. When we say Bharat, another phrase is discussed — unity in diversity.
Bhagwat said if any Hindu thinks that there should be no Muslims in Bharat, he will not remain a Hindu.Bhagwat said that in Bharat, people of all denominations live. “By tradition, Bharat has given shelter to everybody. Those who could not find a safe place in the world came to Bharat, where they found their place,” he said. "So many styles of living. We appear different. We are different," Bhagwat said, before explaining how people remain distinct in their everyday material existence.

The RSS leader said that the principle that sustains the world is what Bharat calls ‘Dharma’, while stressing that the concept should not be understood simply as religion or worship. According to Bhagwat, Dharma refers to the underlying principle through which the universe is sustained. "On that basis, the sustaining principle that we call Dharma. Dharma is not religion. It is not worship. It is beyond all this," he said. "It is the rule through which the universe is sustained. It is the rule through which human beings can manage dualities of life," he added.
